Coaliac Disease and Lactose Intolerance - Why??

When I found out that I had an intolerance to Gluten it took me a while to get to grips with how to cope with the lifestyle and it turns out its surprisingly easy. However, last month I found that I was starting to get similar symptoms again such as bloating, stomach pain and nausea. This did worry me but after carrying out a food diary I managed to find a link between these symptoms and Dairy Products.
Dairy contains lactose, and lactose is a type of sugar found in animal milk. The intolerance comes from the body not having the enzyme needed to digest this particular sugar and if the lactose is undigested, it causes either some or all of the below symptoms to appear:
  • ·         Bloating.
  • ·         Nausea.
  • ·         Flatulence.
  • ·         Stomach Pains.
  • ·         Diarrhea.

Even though I did not have all of these symptoms, I’m not going to lie, I found it rather distressing. But as soon as I cut the dairy out of my system I managed to feel so much better but I did start to worry about the loss of calcium and how this would affect my body. You can find calcium in non-dairy foods including:
  • ·         Spinach.
  • ·         Tinned Fish.
  • ·         Kale.
  • ·         Cabbage.
  • ·         Beans.
  • ·         Dried Figs.

If you think you have and intolerance to lactose I highly recommend you going to see your GP just to get their advice. I've not found it the easiest of journeys but I am adapting and finding it easier to manage. If you have any questions feel free to ask, I've asked an enormous amount of questions relating to this and have done an insane amount of research so if you have any questions feel free to ask.

Love Lucy xoxo
